All about the Free Water program

The Free Water program is our initiative aimed at promoting our solutions for providing free water to the southern region of Madagascar.

EDUCATION OF LOCAL POPULATIONS

From the outset, Niris has prioritized the integration of local stakeholders. Our objective is not limited to the mere deployment of units, but rather to establish a stable and sustainable environment that benefits all parties involved. This necessitates the provision of training for local stakeholders.

COSTS MANAGEMENT

Niris was established by a company director using personal funds. Cost management, efficiency, and effectiveness are fundamental principles of the association.

REFLECTION BY SOLAR PANEL

Why did you choose the reflective solar solution?

Reverse Osmosis

There are multiple methods available for seawater desalination. The most widely recognized approach is reverse osmosis, a highly efficient filtration system that selectively allows natural water to pass while removing impurities. Chemical treatment is applied to handle the residues. It’s important to note that this process can be energy-intensive.

Wells

Well water is brackish when it is available. However, the prolonged drought has resulted in most water tables being depleted.

Water diversion

Another potential solution to explore is redirecting water from rivers. One example of this is a water pipeline project that transports water from the Efaho River to Ambovombe. While this approach is highly promising, it is important to note that its applicability is limited to specific regions.

Solar reflection and concentration

Solar reflection through concentration is a technique commonly employed in solar power plants to generate energy. The principle we have implemented follows a similar approach, with the distinction that our current focus is not on energy production.

Tech4good

We firmly believe that embracing innovation, technology, and scientific advancements is the key to addressing the humanitarian and ecological challenges of our time.

Low tech

The entire project has been meticulously designed to minimize electricity consumption (currently none) and to be easily reproducible and scalable.

Education

We provide training at the local level to empower individuals and foster self-sufficiency, enabling them to meet their own needs.

Why is there a drought in Madagascar?

Whether it is global warming or other climatic variables, the observation is the same, more than a million people according to the UN live in a situation of extreme poverty and famine.

How to participate in the project?

We can join as a member or as a member of the association.

What will the program funding be used for?

In the first instance, to finance collective water pipes.
We will transport water to our partner associations via these pipes. Each partner will be connected to the main pipeline (except if it is on the coast) and will have its own desalination units.
They will commit themselves via the Niris charter to the respect of sanitary and security measures. Of course, we will have our own desalination units on lands where there are no local associations present.

You are an association in Madagascar, how much does a unit cost?

Before talking about the price, we must talk about the charter. There is a charter to sign with a commitment to respect the values of the project. For the price, contact us and we will study what solutions you need for your environment.

Why is water free?

The majority of the population in the south has no economy. To prevent water trafficking from occurring, it is important that water be plentiful. When the economy is reborn in the region, water can then become a paying resource, but not before agriculture and all primary needs are met. In any case, no one can afford to pay for water, but that is not the point.

How much water can the current units produce?

The current units are not optimized at all. They are prototypes intended to test the feasibility of the project. Many improvements are planned to significantly increase the yield. The units can produce to 500L/day.

Is the water safe to drink?

Distilled water is safe to drink but not recommended. Over-consumption of distilled water causes deficiencies and is not good for the body. It is therefore necessary to respect our charter to be sure to provide drinking water without deficiency.

Where is the association?

The association which holds the project is French. It is located in the Tarn. There is also an association in Madagascar.
